80th anniversary edition of Europe's oldest theatre festival — "To Shock and Amaze"
Recklinghausen, with around 113,000 inhabitants, the district town of Recklinghausen, has been inextricably linked with the Ruhrfestspiele since 1947 — one of the world's oldest and internationally most renowned theatre festivals. The festival has a unique founding story: In the winter of 1946/47, in the midst of post-war hardship, Recklinghausen miners sent coal to Hamburg because the theatres there (Thalia Theater, Hamburger Schauspielhaus) could not perform without fuel. In return, the Hamburg theatres performed for the Recklinghausen miners in the summer of 1947 — the Ruhrfestspiele were born, a cultural event with an explicitly democratic and solidarity-based claim.
In 2026, the festival celebrates its 80th edition — a historic anniversary. This year's motto "To Shock and Amaze" plays with the dual impact of great theatre art: the shock at what concerns us as a society (war, climate crisis, division), and the amazement at what art nevertheless creates (beauty, connection, hope). A programmatic statement in politically turbulent times.
The numbers speak for themselves:
The programme includes theatre (drama), dance, circus, literature, music, and cabaret — a cross-section of international stage art.
The lineup features some of the most important stage artists of our time:
A special feature of the 2026 edition: The main theatre is closed for extensive renovation work. Instead, the season will be spread across several venues:
A specially erected festival tent on the Green Hill — capacity around 500 seats, equipped with professional stage technology. The main venue for major productions in 2026.
The smaller theatre building on the festival grounds — for more intimate productions, chamber plays, and readings.
The stage in the neighbouring town of Marl — integrated into the festival, offering additional performance capacity.
A former mining industrial hall used for the festival — impressive industrial architecture as a theatre space.
A municipal cultural centre in the south of Recklinghausen — a venue for readings, discussions, and chamber performances.
The festival opens on Labour Day, May 1, 2026, with the traditional Culture Volksfest on the Green Hill. The Culture Volksfest is more than just a ceremony: it's an open festival ground with a DGB demonstration, multiple stages, a free programme of music, cabaret, dance, and theatre, culinary stands, and broad political participation. The festival commemorates the solidarity-based founding myth of the Ruhrfestspiele — and remains a must-attend event for Recklinghausen residents and guests from the entire Ruhr region.
