The largest carnival parade in Westphalia — over 100 floats and walking groups through Münster's historic old town
Münster, the capital of Westphalia, is often described as reserved, academic, and conservative — but on Rose Monday, the city sheds these clichés. The Rosenmontagszug Münster is the largest carnival parade in Westphalia and one of the most significant in all of Northern Germany — Münster, along with Cologne and Aachen, forms the northern border of the Rhineland-Westphalian carnival. For one day in February 2026, the city transforms: confetti instead of books, costumes instead of lecture notes.
The parade starts at 12:11 PM from Schlossplatz. The time 12:11 is no coincidence — 11 is the sacred number of carnival (Elferrat, November 11th as the start of carnival). This symbolism permeates the entire tradition from Aachen to Münster. The parade lasts for about four hours through the old town — the official route concludes around 3:30 PM.
The 2026 route (approx. 4 km):
More than 100 floats and walking groups participate — from Münster, the surrounding Münsterland communities, and even from nearby the Netherlands (a special feature of Münster's carnival: the cross-border component). The floats are elaborately decorated, often with local political or socio-critical themes — Münster personalities, university politics, and urban development issues are satirically targeted. Kamelle (sweets) are thrown from the floats, and the crowd collects them with bags and sacks.
Typically, 80,000 to 120,000 spectators gather along the route — an impressive number for a city of 320,000 inhabitants. Münster residents and guests from the Münsterland region line the railings and roadsides, gather in local pubs and cafes, and sometimes even perch on window ledges.
The Engelenschanze at the end of the route is the family zone: alcohol-free area, changing facilities, quieter atmosphere. Parents with small children can watch the parade arrive here without the loud hustle and bustle of the city center. This is a deliberate decision by the organizers who want to keep the festival open to families.
The organizer is the Bürgerausschuss Münsterscher Karneval e.V. (BMK), which has been coordinating the carnival season in Münster for decades: prince's coronation, sessions, ladies' cap sessions, carnival parade. The BMK unites the city's carnival clubs and works closely with the city administration.
Münster is just one of several carnival strongholds in the Münsterland. Werne, Coesfeld, Lüdinghausen, Wadersloh, and Beckum also have their own parades. However, the Münster parade is the largest and shapes the image of Münsterland carnival.
Westphalia's largest carnival parade brings together floats and walking groups from Münster, the Münsterland region, and the Netherlands. 80,000 to 120,000 spectators line the route. Organizer: Bürgerausschuss Münsterscher Karneval e.V.
