Rosenmontagszug in Landkern in the Kaisersesch municipality in the Cochem-Zell district
The Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday Parade) in Landkern is one of the traditional Carnival parades at the height of the festive season in the Kaisersesch municipality. The Eifel village in the Cochem-Zell district attracts revellers from the entire region on Rose Monday, who spend a boisterous afternoon together with floats, walking groups, music, and carnival merriment.
In 2026, the parade starts on Monday, February 16th at 3:11 PM. The festive start time, the colourful costumes of the participants, and the flood of sweets for the children along the roadside make Rose Monday in Landkern a true Volksfest (public festival).
While the major strongholds of Cologne, Mainz, and Düsseldorf dominate the stage on Rose Monday with their TV-broadcast mega-parades, many smaller towns in the Eifel and Hunsrück regions maintain their own Rose Monday traditions. Landkern is one of these places: With manageable effort, a lot of commitment, and great enthusiasm, the village community organises a parade that has an appeal far beyond the municipal borders.
Carnival clubs, the fire brigade, sports clubs, and neighbourhoods participate with their own floats and walking groups. The floats are built in garages and barns in the weeks leading up to Rose Monday, often with political, satirical, or humorous themes. Throwing material such as sweets, candies, and small promotional gifts are thrown into the crowd in abundance.
Brass bands, marching bands, and Guggemusik (costumed musicians playing wind instruments) provide the right sound along the route. Cheers of "Helau!" echo through the village, costumed spectators dance along the roadside, and after the parade, the action moves into the hall, the club house, or under a festival tent.
The Rhenish Carnival tradition dates back to the 19th century and shapes the Eifel villages just as much as the big cities on the Rhine. Carnival is a custom that connects generations, brings neighbourhoods together, and brings a colourful, cheerful end to winter weariness. In Landkern, this tradition comes alive anew every year.
In 2026, the Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday Parade) in Landkern takes place on Monday, February 16th. The start is at the festive time of 3:11 PM. Floats, walking groups, brass bands, and revellers parade through the village centre, transforming the Eifel village into a colourful, loud Carnival celebration. Afterwards, the festivities continue in the community hall or festival tent until late into the night.

Rose Monday marks the highlight of the Carnival season – after days of seated events and weekend parades, Landkern celebrates one last time before everything ends on Ash Wednesday.
