Official start of the garden season in the world-famous Zweibrücken Rose Garden
With its approximately 50,000 rose bushes of more than 2,000 varieties, the Zweibrücken Rose Garden is one of Europe's outstanding rose collections. Across an area of about 50,000 square meters, a botanical showcase unfolds, presenting historical English Roses as well as modern bed, shrub, climbing, and ground cover varieties. The official season opening on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 11 AM marks the beginning of the intensive visitor period. Until the closure in late autumn, the entire grounds, the Mediterranean garden, the Japanese themed area, the herb garden, and the sculpture installation are open to visitors.
Founded in 1914, the Zweibrücken Rose Garden has celebrated the rose as the queen of flowers for over a century. From the German Empire through the World Wars to the present day, the garden has developed into an institution renowned far beyond the Palatinate region. New international rose varieties are tested and awarded here, and breeders from all over the world present their best varieties. The season opening is thus also a small piece of German garden culture history, celebrated anew each spring.
Those who wish to experience the Rose Garden in its full splendor should plan a visit in June when most varieties are in their main blooming period. Thousands of buds open simultaneously, the fragrance fills the entire garden, and butterflies, bees, and bumblebees populate the beds. The garden remains attractive in July, August, and September, as many varieties bloom multiple times a year. In October, the garden transforms into a colorful autumn painting before being prepared for its winter rest.
The extensive event program of the Rose Garden also kicks off with the season opening. Sunday morning picnic concerts, readings, comedy evenings with prominent artists, family festivals, garden workshops, and special guided tours accompany the season. Most events are free and cater to families, seniors, tourists, and locals alike. Detailed dates can be found on the official website rosengarten-zweibruecken.de under the Events section.
The season opening is traditionally celebrated with a small ceremony at the main entrance, attended by representatives of the city of Zweibrücken, the environmental agency UBZ, and the support association. Afterwards, the entire garden is open to the public. Gardeners are available to answer questions, and the Café Rosenstube offers refreshments and light snacks.
