A Century of Club Tradition
The Ringreiter- und Schützenverein «Glück auf» Lütjenholm e.V. was founded in 1920 and, with around 130 members, remains the largest cultural organisation in the village of Nordfriesland to this day. The annual May festival is a fixed date in the municipality's event calendar — a combination of rural equestrian sport, shooting tradition, and village community.
Three Disciplines, One Festival
The Ringreiter- und Schützenfest combines three competitions in one day:
- Ringreiten — around 20 riders attempt to spear small rings from a gallows while galloping with a lance. This traditional discipline dates back to the 17th century in Schleswig-Holstein.
- Vogelschießen with the air rifle — about 50 marksmen compete for the title of king by shooting off the symbols from a wooden bird one by one.
- Festball — in the evening, the festival grounds transform into a dance floor; the proclamation of the king and the social highlight coincide.
Festival Grounds Behind the Former School
The venue for the festival is the area behind the former school in Lütjenholm. The club sets up its festival tent here, erects the gallows, and arranges the shooting range. Families from the village and the surrounding area come together on the festival day — club members, riders, marksmen, residents, and guests.
Other Events in the Club Year
In addition to the May festival, "Glück auf" also organises a summer festival and an autumn ring riding event. A gymnastics group meets on Wednesdays, the annual general meeting always takes place on the first Friday in January, and on December 31st, the club invites everyone to a New Year's Eve gathering. Lütjenholm is thus one of the North Frisian communities where club life shapes the cycle of the year — from the first May weekend to New Year's Eve.
