Traditional North Frisian Ringreiten — one of the region's oldest folk entertainments
Ringreiten is one of the characteristic equestrian traditions of North Frisia and South Denmark. Almost every place in the region has its own Ringreiten guild — in Goldebek, it is the "Freie Bahn" Goldebek e.V. Ring Riders and Marksmen Association, founded in 1948 and has been organizing the annual Ringreiten ever since. The sport's roots lie in medieval tournament games, which have been organized in guild form since the late 18th century.
The rider gallops with a roughly two-meter-long lance in hand between two posts, to the crossbeam of which a free wooden "gallows" is attached. A small brass ring of 12 to 25 millimeters in diameter hangs from it. The task: to spear the ring with the tip of the lance from a gallop without touching the gallows. At least three gallop strides must occur before and after the thrust — no stopping, no slowing down.
Whoever hits the most rings in the competition is crowned King. Some guilds hold a separate king's ride for this purpose. Royal dignity and honorary titles hold high social status in the North Frisian villages.
The small municipality of Goldebek is located in the district of Nordfriesland, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, within the Amt Mittleres Nordfriesland, between Bredstedt and Husum. As in many North Frisian villages, riding tradition shapes social life — Ringreiten here is less a spectacle than community life. The "Freie Bahn" Goldebek association has been preserving the tradition for almost 80 years.
The mottos and banners of the Ringreiten guilds often contain references to Frisian freedom — a historical identity element that expresses independence from Danish and German influences over the centuries. Seen in this light, Ringreiten is far more than a sport: it is a performative reminder of the cultural distinctiveness of the Frisian marshland.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition unbroken since 1948. Riders from the surrounding area are expected — Bredstedt, Husum, Niebüll, Leck, and other guilds. The "Freie Bahn" Goldebek association coordinates the competition process; the rules follow the general statutes of the North Frisian Ringreiten guilds.
For spectators, the Ringreiten is an impressive spectacle: horse and rider at a gallop, the swift movement of the lance, the clink when the ring is hit. Since the ring is only 12 to 25 millimeters in diameter, every hit is a small sensation.
Food and drinks are offered by the association — bratwurst, coffee, cake, non-alcoholic beverages, and beer.
By car: B5 or B202 towards Bredstedt, then turn off to Goldebek. Parking in the village and at the Ringreiterplatz (riding ground).
Free.
