Magic of Lights on the Salzhaff
The Rerik Festival of Lights on the Haff is the traditional season finale of the Ostseebad Rerik (Baltic Sea resort) and is celebrated at the beginning of September on the Haff promenade. The organizer is the shanty choir Reriker Heulbojen e.V., which gives the festival its maritime character. As evening falls over the Salzhaff, the namesake magic of lights emerges: countless floating candles illuminate the water's surface.
Parade of Boats and Shanty Songs
The highlight of the evening is a festive parade of sailboats across the Haff, accompanied by the glow of floating candles and a bonfire on the promenade. The Reriker Heulbojen sing their sea shanties, and the folk-rock band Bad Penny provides further live music. The event concludes with fireworks illuminating the night sky over the Salzhaff.
Program Over Two Days
The Festival of Lights usually spans two days: a "pre-lighting" on Friday evening sets the mood for the festival, while Saturday features the main program with a children's program in the afternoon and the Festival of Lights in the evening, lasting into the night. Admission is free.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rostock District
Rerik belongs to the Rostock district and lies on a narrow spit of land between the Salzhaff and the Baltic Sea. The Festival of Lights bids farewell to the summer season in a calm, atmospheric way, emphasizing the maritime character of the seaside resort – a festival that makes the Rerikers' connection to their Haff visible.
