Traditional beach festival on Plauer See in the Quetzin district
The Plauer See, with its good 38 km², is one of the largest inland lakes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. On its western shore, nestled between forest and bay, lies the district of Quetzin of the town of Plau am See – a small settlement with its own bathing beach. This beach has been the venue for the Quetziner Strandfest every first weekend of August since 1997, organized by the Quetziner Siedler- und Heimatverein. 2026 will celebrate the 30th anniversary.
The beach festival begins on Friday evening with music and dancing on the beach – DJ set, live band, later disco. Saturday is the classic competition day: land competitions (tug-of-war, sack race, bratwurst throwing) and water competitions (swimming races, boat races, stand-up paddle race), supplemented by performances by Quetziner clubs and soloists. The evening concludes with a dance until late into the night.
The heritage association itself takes care of the culinary catering, with classic North German specialties: barbecue stand with bratwurst and steaks, fish specialties (smoked eel, fried fish, Bismarck herring) from Plauer See and Müritz, Lübzer Pils on tap from the nearby Lübz brewery, plus a small cocktail bar for summer evenings. Prices are affordable, and proceeds go to club projects and the maintenance of Quetzin beach.
The Quetziner Strandfest is a festival for the region: Quetzin and Plau residents, weekend guests from Berlin, Hamburg, and Schwerin who have holiday homes or bungalows around Plau, and campers from the neighboring campsite. Families are welcome, and the format is decidedly intergenerational. Anyone looking for a quiet summer evening on Plauer See with genuine Mecklenburg beach festival character – without touristy staging – will find it here.
The district of Quetzin belongs to the town of Plau am See in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. Quetzin beach is a popular bathing spot even outside of the festival, with a DLRG lifeguard station in high season, a sunbathing lawn, and a boat dock. The Quetziner Bay starts from Quetzin beach – a shallow bay particularly suitable for families with children.
The 30th Quetziner Strandfest will be celebrated on the first weekend of August 2026 – an anniversary that the Quetziner Siedler- und Heimatverein intends to honor with an expanded program and a celebratory speech at the festival's opening on Friday evening.
The basic structure remains the proven format: Friday, July 31, music and dance evening to kick things off, Saturday, August 1, competition day with water and land competitions (swimming, boat races, tug-of-war, sack race), performances by Quetziner clubs, dance evening in the evening with a live band, Sunday, August 2, morning pint with brass music and family program. Catering by the heritage association with a barbecue stand, fish specialties, and Lübzer Pils on tap.
