One-day Christmas market on Steinstraße in the old town
The Plauer Weihnachtsstraße is the one-day Advent spectacle that transforms the old town of Plau am See into a small, pedestrian-friendly Christmas mile on a Saturday in December. The venue is Steinstraße – the historic main axis of the old town – between the town hall and the castle square. Stalls, fairy lights, booths, a hint of mulled wine and cinnamon: a classic small-town Advent market, without the scale of the big Hanseatic city Christmas markets, but with plenty of character.
The culinary offerings range from mulled wine and punch to duck leg, bratwurst, and Lübzer Pils on tap, to freshly baked waffles and cakes. The shop windows of Plau's businesses are festively illuminated, and many shops have extended opening hours. A stage program runs throughout the day on the stage in Steinstraße, featuring music, show acts, and performances by local clubs and schools.
A special feature of the Plauer Weihnachtsstraße are the stalls run by school classes and clubs: interactive hands-on stalls with craft activities, games, small competitions, and refreshments, managed by students as part of class projects. The proceeds go to class funds and club projects. For the younger children, there's a children's carousel, a bouncy castle, a large illuminated tractor for kids to explore, and – right on time at 11:00 AM – a visit from Santa Claus at the castle square.
A practical Plau detail: Families can buy their Christmas tree directly on site and have it conveniently delivered home afterward. This combination of a Christmas market and tree sale makes the day a firm Advent tradition for many families.
Plau am See in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district is a lively tourist town in the summer, very quiet in the winter. The Weihnachtsstraße is one of the few days in the year when the old town is well-attended again in December. Those who have Plauer See as a travel destination often combine the market day with a walk along the snowy lake shore or a visit to the parallel Plauer Burgweihnacht in the castle courtyard.
In 2026, the Plauer Steinstraße will once again transform into a lively, one-day Christmas market on the third Saturday of Advent. Date: Saturday, December 12, 2026, starting at 11:00 AM. The market extends along Steinstraße to the castle square.
A varied program of music, show acts, and performances by Plau clubs and schools runs throughout the day on the stage in Steinstraße. Mulled wine, duck leg, bratwurst, Lübzer Pils on tap, waffles, and cakes are available for visitors; the shop windows of Plau's businesses are festively illuminated.
Free admission. Food and drinks at usual market prices (mulled wine €4, duck leg €8–10, bratwurst €4). Children's carousel and bouncy castle may incur a fee or be free depending on sponsorship.
