When the World Heritage City Becomes a Reading Festival
In spring, Quedlinburg transforms into a single stage for literature. For three months — from mid-March to May (and extended to June 2026) — authors read in bookstores, lecture halls, cafés, libraries, the collegiate church, Pölkenhof, and Schlossberg. The Quedlinburg Book Spring has been Saxony-Anhalt's most enduring literary festival since the early 2000s and, at the same time, one of the most well-known cultural formats in the Harz region.
World Heritage City as Festival Venue
Quedlinburg has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994 — making it arguably the most atmospheric festival backdrop in all of Saxony-Anhalt. Over 2,000 half-timbered houses from eight centuries, Schlossberg with its collegiate church and Quedlinburg Castle, the Münzenberg quarter, and the market square form the setting for readings in often very unusual venues. The combination of a medieval World Heritage City and a literary program gives the festival a unique character that is hard to replicate.
More Than Just Readings
The program includes more than just author readings: book presentations by publishers, literary walks through the old town, poetry evenings, children's book presentations, cultural events at the observatory, readings for local talent (e.g., at Pölkenhof, in April), cabaret with a literary connection. Annually, over two dozen venues and as many publishers and bookstores participate.
Organizers: City and Association Together
The festival is organized by the World Heritage City of Quedlinburg and the Dachverein Reichenstraße e.V., an association of business people and cultural creators from the historic Reichenstraße. This partnership between the municipality and a citizens' association has supported the Book Spring for over two decades and has continuously developed it with local publishers and bookstores.
Saxony-Anhalt's Literary Spring
Quedlinburg is located in the Harz district, on the northern edge of the mountain range of the same name. Visitors to the Book Spring often combine the readings with walks through the World Heritage sites, visits to the Schlossberg Museum, or a trip to the Collegiate Church of St. Servatii. The city is directly accessible by train from Halberstadt, Magdeburg, and Halle via the Quedlinburg train station.
Atmosphere
The Book Spring is intimate, intellectual, and regionally rooted. The readings are often small and held in historic rooms — an atmosphere that is rarely found in the major literary houses of Berlin or Munich. This is precisely why the festival has its loyal audience, who return every year from Quedlinburg, Halberstadt, Wernigerode, and Magdeburg.
