Niendorf/Ostsee and the Niendorfer Balkon
Niendorf/Ostsee is a district of the municipality of Timmendorfer Strand in the Ostholstein district of Schleswig-Holstein. The Niendorf harbour with its distinctive pier is one of the landmarks of the Lübeck Bay. The "Niendorfer Balkon" is located directly on the pier—an elevated area with a sea view, which becomes the stage for the Volunteer Fire Brigade's Promenadenfest every summer.
What to Expect
For years, the Promenadenfest has followed a proven recipe: live music and DJs on Friday until late, a flea market along the promenade on Saturday, puppet theatre by the fire brigade for children, an exhibition of emergency vehicles (including historical ones), a live band on Saturday evening, and the spectacular fireworks display from the pier to conclude.
Pea Soup from the Field Kitchen
The hallmark of the festival is the homemade pea soup from the fire brigade's original field kitchen—a small institution every year, complemented by bratwurst, fish rolls, Prague ham, draught beer, cocktails, sparkling wine, and non-alcoholic beverages.
Highlight: Fireworks from the Pier
Around 10:45 PM, the fireworks display begins directly from the Niendorf Pier—one of the few opportunities in summer in Northern Germany to experience a beach fireworks display over the open sea. Families can find spots on the balcony and the promenade; crowds are expected.
An Event by and for the Community
The proceeds from the festival benefit the Niendorf Volunteer Fire Brigade. If you want to experience genuine Lübeck Bay community life, this is the place to be—not a mega-event, but exactly the right mix of tradition, summer atmosphere, and community spirit.
