Brazil meets Big Band — SHMF Jazz Evening at Maritim Seehotel Timmendorfer Strand
With Ivan Lins, a living legend of Música Popular Brasileira takes the stage: the native Carioca has collaborated with greats like Quincy Jones, Sarah Vaughan, and Patti Austin in his over 50-year career and is considered one of Brazil's most important songwriters. Alongside him on this evening: the New York Voices, the four-part vocal ensemble from the USA that has won three Grammys in the last 35 years, and the Danish Radio Big Band, one of Northern Europe's most renowned ensembles, led by German pianist and arranger Ralf Schmid.
The Maritim Seehotel, located directly on the beach in Timmendorf, has long been one of the SHMF's regular venues in the Baltic Sea region. The hotel's MainStage — a classic concert hall with modern stage technology — can accommodate around 1,000 guests and is acoustically designed for large big band ensembles. Timmendorfer Strand itself is situated in the Ostholstein district of Schleswig-Holstein and is one of Germany's most famous Baltic Sea resorts.
The concert is part of JazzBaltica 2026, the SHMF's traditional jazz series focusing on Northern European jazz, and simultaneously one of the opening nights of the entire 41st Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (July 4 – August 30, 2026). Thus, the stages open as early as June 25, 2026 — a special constellation, as JazzBaltica and SHMF have been cooperating on joint programs for years.
The concert in the Grand Hall (MainStage) of the Maritim Seehotel combines Brazilian and North American sound worlds: Ivan Lins, one of the most significant songwriters of Música Popular Brasileira, performs with his own band and appears together with the American vocal quartet New York Voices and the renowned Danish Radio Big Band, one of Scandinavia's largest big band ensembles.
Musically, the evening is led by German pianist and composer Ralf Schmid, responsible for Lins classics and new arrangements — a sensual synthesis of Samba, Bossa Nova, Brazilian Pop, and Big Band Jazz awaits the audience.
A concert as part of JazzBaltica 2026 and an opening event of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.
Timmendorfer Strand is accessible via the A1 motorway (exit Pansdorf) and by train (Timmendorfer Strand station). The Maritim Seehotel is located directly on the beach promenade.
