Along the Axis Through a Christmassy Potsdam

Few German Christmas markets extend along such a spectacular axis as the Potsdamer Weihnachtszauber. From Luisenplatz in front of the Brandenburg Gate, via the historic Brandenburger Straße—one of Germany's most beautiful preserved Baroque shopping streets—to Bassinplatz with its water basin and the French Reformed Church, the festive mile stretches for a good 1.5 kilometers through Potsdam's city center. With the renaming in 2025 and a new operator, the market was fundamentally re-conceptualized—and is now one of the largest and longest Christmas markets in the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

Ice Rink, Ferris Wheel, Twinkling Lights

The main attractions are spread along the axis: An ice rink invites you to skate—skates can be rented on-site, and after dark, skating under the fairy lights of Brandenburger Straße becomes a magical experience. A Ferris wheel offers a panoramic view of wintery Potsdam from its highest point—on a clear day, the view extends to Park Sanssouci. Several smaller stations with light installations, a carousel for the little ones, and a sleigh photo spot complete the experience.

Regional Delicacies and Arts and Crafts

At the hundreds of stalls along the axis, visitors will find what makes a truly good Christmas market: handcrafted quality instead of industrially produced mass goods. Hand-knitted wool hats from the Mark Brandenburg, colorful artworks by regional artists, Christmas tree ornaments made of wood and glass, advent candles made of wax, bratwurst from Brandenburg pig farms, mulled wine from Brandenburg wineries, honey liqueur from the Spreewald, gingerbread from regional bakeries. Brass ensembles, choirs, and singer-songwriters provide musical accompaniment on several stages.

Three Squares, Three Moods

The three main points of the market have different characters. Luisenplatz in front of the Brandenburg Gate is the monumental start with a view of the city gate—this is where the largest stalls and usually the Ferris wheel are located. The Brandenburger Straße, the central shopping axis, forms the longest festive mile with hundreds of stalls, stages, and the ice rink. Bassinplatz, with the French Reformed Church in the background, is the quieter endpoint with smaller artisan stalls and cozy mulled wine stands.

Potsdam — World Heritage in Christmas Spirit

Potsdam is the capital of Brandenburg and, with its palaces and gardens (Sanssouci, Cecilienhof, Babelsberg), is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Weihnachtszauber offers the opportunity to experience the city in a very special atmosphere. If you have time: Combine your visit to the market with a walk through the Dutch Quarter, a visit to one of the palace parks, or a ride on the historic tram along the Havel River. If you're only making a day trip: An S-Bahn ride from Berlin Hbf will take you directly to the city center in 30 minutes.

Five Weeks of Christmas Magic

From November 23 to December 27, 2026, the Potsdamer Weihnachtszauber opens the 1.5 km long festive mile in the city center every day (except Christmas Eve). The three main squares—Luisenplatz, Brandenburger Straße, Bassinplatz—form a Christmas experience stretching across the entire city center.

The atmosphere changes throughout the day: family atmosphere during the day with carousels, hot chocolate, and gingerbread, and in the evening, a special magic with mulled wine and fairy lights that bathes the historic bourgeois house architecture in golden light.
