City-wide Music Festival on the Longest Day
The Fête de la Musique was invented in France in 1982 — Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture, called on all French musicians on June 21 to play publicly on this day, the astronomical start of summer, for free and everywhere. An idea that is now celebrated in over 120 countries and 700 cities. Potsdam has been participating since 2005 and will celebrate its 22nd edition in 2026 — and with over 40 stages and more than 130 acts, it is one of the largest German Fête cities outside of Berlin.
Over 40 Stages, Over 130 Acts
The diversity of venues is the real hallmark. A classical combo plays in front of the Filmmuseum, a singer-songwriter performs in the courtyard of a café on Lindenstraße, a choir sings on Bassinplatz, jazz musicians jam in Babelsberg Park, and a hip-hop crew plays in the garden of the Hans Otto Theater. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the audience wanders freely from venue to venue. Those who love a specific genre can get the printed program on the festival day and pick out their highlights. Those who just want to go with the flow will discover something new everywhere.
All Genres, All Age Groups
The musical spectrum is deliberately broad: classical (string quartets, wind ensembles, soloists), jazz (from trad jazz to free improv), pop, rock, hip-hop, reggae, folk, world music (African drums, Klezmer, Latin American music), electronic music. All acts play for free, all have applied to Kulturtänzer e.V. — the coordinators select from the incoming applications without setting a strict filter. The Fête thrives on diversity, not selection.
Kiezorchester Babelsberg at the AWO Kulturhaus
Parallel to the city-wide festival, the Kiezorchester Babelsberg plays a special concert at the AWO Kulturhaus Babelsberg. The orchestra, composed of Babelsberg music lovers and semi-professional musicians, offers a classical program in one of the quieter venues — an alternative to the noisy city center for those who prefer classical music.
Kulturtänzer e.V. — The Organizer
Behind the Fête in Potsdam is the association Kulturtänzer e.V., a community-supported cultural organization that has been taking care of the Fête in Potsdam for years. Financed without admission fees, the event is funded through sponsoring, donations, and above all, the voluntary commitment of numerous helpers. Those who want to give something back to the Fête: A donation via the website fete-potsdam.de or voluntary help in the team is always welcome.
Potsdam on the Day of Music
Potsdam is in a special mode on this day: The UNESCO World Heritage city presents itself not only as a baroque palace city but also as a vibrant cultural metropolis with a young, diverse scene. Those arriving from Berlin (approx. 30 minutes by S-Bahn) will experience a city in festival mode. Tip: Bring sturdy shoes, pack a water bottle, and ideally, take the whole day and evening — the music plays from 2 p.m. until midnight or longer.
