Grand Pirmasens Spring Volksfest on the Meßplatz with rides, market stalls, and fireworks – 11 days of fair tradition
The Pirmasens May Market upholds the tradition of southern German spring markets, which have celebrated the transition from winter to the warmer season since the Middle Ages. Today, it is a modern folk festival featuring showmen from all over southern Germany, attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the Meßplatz annually. With 11 days of festivities, it is one of the longer folk festivals in the region.
Classic and modern rides are set up on the Meßplatz: Ferris wheel, bumper cars, looping coasters, children's rides, carousels, haunted house, shooting galleries, and candy stalls. Family days with reduced prices make it especially accessible for families with children. Food stalls offer classic folk festival fare – bratwurst, fries, grilled fish on a stick, candied almonds, 'Schmalzkuchen' (fried dough pastries), gingerbread hearts – complemented by Palatinate specialties.
On April 30, 2026, the May Market will be officially opened with a keg tapping ceremony. The opening is performed by the mayor or a city representative, traditionally watched by many guests filling the large beer tent. Throughout the opening day and subsequent festival days, music groups, DJ sets, and family programs alternate.
On May 5 and 6, 2026, the May Market is complemented by a large market with around 100 stalls along Blocksbergstraße. Traders present household goods, textiles, tools, sweets, plants, leather goods, and much more – a classic southern German market with high foot traffic.
On the final festival evening – May 10, 2026 – a grand firework display over Pirmasens' Meßplatz concludes the spring festival. This event is typically very well attended and provides the emotional culmination of the eleven days of the May Market.
The period from April 30 to May 10, 2026, covers two weekends, including the bridge days around May 1st (Labor Day) and Ascension Day (May 14th falls shortly after the festival ends). This ensures maximum public participation. The City of Pirmasens and the showmen have been preparing the festival grounds for weeks – setting up rides, conducting safety checks, and establishing the supply infrastructure.
The exact program for 2026, including family days, special promotions, and opening hours, will be communicated by the City of Pirmasens before the festival.
