Summery Garden Party in the Courtyard of the Electoral Palace Mainz
The Electoral Palace Mainz, built from 1627 onwards as the residence of the Mainz Archbishops and Electors, is one of the most significant Renaissance buildings on the Middle Rhine. Its adjacent garden, originally laid out as a formal baroque garden and redesigned several times over the centuries, is now a green oasis in the heart of Mainz city center with views of the Rhine. With its paths, rose beds, trees, and seating areas, it offers the ideal backdrop for a summery garden party.
The Mainzer Schlossgartenfest uses this atmosphere to bring the people of Mainz together for a relaxed open-air summer festival. Organized by changing partner clubs and initiatives, in close cooperation with the City of Mainz, the format is designed as an open summer festival that appeals equally to families, couples, groups of friends, and individual guests.
The program combines musical, culinary, and atmospheric elements. Mainz and regional musicians perform on a small stage in the garden—acoustic sets, singer-songwriters, jazz trios, small classical ensembles. Stands offer Rheinhessen wines, Spundekäs and Handkäs mit Musik, regional bratwurst, salads, desserts, coffee, and cake. Cocktail bars and ice cream stands complete the offerings. A children's program with games, hands-on activities, and small children's concerts is aimed at families.
The highlight for many visitors is the transition into the late evening. As the sun sets over the Rhine, fairy lights and subtly staged lamps illuminate the garden, the palace emerges as an illuminated backdrop, and the concerts on the stage unfold a particularly atmospheric ambiance in the twilight. The Mainzer Schlossgartenfest is therefore not just a summer festival, but a conscious staging of a historic site as a cultural meeting place for the city.
The 2026 program will be published by the partner clubs and the City of Mainz in early summer. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years. Stands in the palace garden will open from late morning or afternoon. The early afternoon will be characterized by family and children's programs, while the concert program on stage will begin in the late afternoon. The late evening will be marked by the light staging of the palace and garden, complemented by evening concerts and relaxed lingering. The festival will end between 10:30 PM and midnight, depending on the program.
