Pforzheim — Gold City at the Entrance to the Black Forest
The city of Pforzheim (approx. 126,000 inhabitants, district and independent city) is located on the northern edge of the Black Forest at the confluence of the Enz, Nagold, and Würm rivers. It is famous as the Gold City — about 75% of the German jewelry and watch industry is based here. In Advent, the city center transforms into a festive landscape of lights with several Christmas markets — the medieval market in the Blumenhof is the most unconventional and atmospheric.
The Blumenhof as a Historic Site
The Blumenhof at Barfüßergasse — south of Pforzheim's main street — is a small courtyard with historic buildings, which is decorated for the medieval market with torches, wooden huts, and medieval-style stage elements. Its location in an enclosed courtyard makes the market particularly intimate — the torchlight creates an atmosphere that clearly differs from the large, bright city center Christmas markets.
14th Edition — Five Weeks of Market
The medieval market is in its 14th edition in 2026 (2024 was No. 12, 2025 No. 13). The season extends over five weeks from Tuesday, November 24th, to Wednesday, December 30th, 2026 — not just on weekends, but also on weekdays from the late afternoon. This exceptionally long season makes the market a whole Advent and Christmas event.
Opening Hours — Weekdays and Weekends
The opening hours differ by day of the week:
- Monday to Friday: from 3:00 PM to approx. 9:00 PM
- Saturday and Sunday: from 12:00 PM to approx. 9:00 PM
The market is usually busiest on Advent weekends, between the years, and on Friday and Saturday.
Medieval Craft Demonstrations
The focus is explicitly on medieval crafts. At their stations, craftspeople demonstrate the following disciplines live:
- Pewter caster — ladles, buttons, pendants made from molten pewter
- Stonemason — carving sandstone and limestone with hammer and chisel
- Blacksmith — sword, knife, and tool making at an open forge
- Bead weaver — stringing glass and wooden beads into necklaces and jewelry
- Candle dipping — traditional dipping of wicks in beeswax
- Wood carving — carving figures, nativity scene elements, wooden spoons
Jugglers and Musicians
The craft stalls are complemented by traveling jugglers with juggling, fire-eating performances, acrobatics, and stilt walking — as well as by medieval musicians: bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, shawm, Jew's harp, and medieval drums. The music constantly alternates between festive Advent pieces and more boisterous market tunes. Storytellers are usually hired and tell stories by the fire in the evenings.
Medieval Catering
The culinary offerings also follow the concept: Mead (honey wine) instead of mulled wine, farmer's bread with lard, wild boar roast, suckling pig on a spit, fried apple rings, roasted chestnuts, honey cake. Clay mugs (eco-friendly deposit system) instead of plastic. Those who prefer conventional options will also find mulled wine and bratwurst.
