Series of traditional folk and marksmen's festivals in the municipalities of the Samtgemeinde Ahlden in the Allerland region
The Samtgemeinde Ahlden comprises six municipalities in the western Heidekreis: Ahlden (Aller), Eilte, Eickeloh, Frankenfeld, Häuslingen, and Hülsen. Its location at the confluence of the Aller and Leine rivers shapes the landscape with floodplain forests, meadows, and heathland areas. The villages are predominantly agricultural and have a vibrant community life with marksmen's clubs, fire brigades, sports clubs, and heritage societies.
In most municipalities of the Samtgemeinde, the marksmen's festivals (Schützenfeste) take place in the summer – usually between June and August. The king's shooting competition, parade, royal proclamation, and royal ball form the basic structure. The festival grounds or the community hall of each village are equipped with a festival tent and carousels. The festival weekends are experienced by many residents as the social highlight of the year.
In September and October, the harvest festivals (Erntefeste) follow. With the harvest crown, harvest thanksgiving service in the village church, parade, and festival evening, the agricultural tradition is continued. The preparation of the harvest crown – woven from grain, flowers, and fruits – is a social event in itself.
Marksmen's clubs, fire brigades, sports clubs, and heritage societies shape the community life of the Samtgemeinde. They work closely together and support each other during the major festivals. Event coordination is partly handled by the Samtgemeinde Ahlden fire brigade, whose website also provides an overview of local festivals.
The Allerland is a rather quiet tourist destination with a focus on cycling tours, the Allerradweg (Aller Cycle Route), and experiencing nature. The marksmen's and harvest festivals offer insights into the authentic community life of the region for heathland holidaymakers and cyclists.
Each municipality in the Samtgemeinde has its own festival tradition. The common elements: parade, royal proclamation, royal ball, harvest crown, harvest thanksgiving service.
