Traditional Pentecost weekend of the Elbersberg Volunteer Fire Brigade in the Franconian Switzerland
The Pfingstfest Elbersberg is one of the typical fire brigade festivals that shape social life in the villages of the Franconian Switzerland. It is organised by the Elbersberg Volunteer Fire Brigade — the local brigade uses the proceeds from catering and the raffle for its equipment and club work. The venue is the festival tent on the outskirts of the village, in a particularly scenic location between karst valleys and forests.
Pentecost is one of the most important festival dates in Franconia. Numerous club, fire brigade, and parish festivals are organised over the extended Pentecost weekend — a tradition that dates back to the mid-20th century. In the weeks before and after Pentecost, several festivals in neighbouring villages often overlap; Franconian Switzerland is one of Bavaria's most densely populated festival regions during this time.
The programme follows a classic scheme: Opening on Saturday afternoon or evening with the tapping of the first beer keg, catering with Franconian delicacies (Schäufele, Bratwurst, Krapfen), live music in the festival tent with regional bands, a morning pint with brass music on Pentecost Sunday, coffee and cake in the afternoon, dancing in the evening, and the festival concluding late on Sunday or on Whit Monday.
Elbersberg is a small district of the town of Pottenstein in the Bayreuth district (State of Bavaria). Pottenstein itself is one of the best-known tourist destinations in Franconian Switzerland — with Pottenstein Castle (one of the oldest preserved castle complexes in Franconia), the Teufelshöhle (Devil's Cave), and the nearby Franconian Switzerland Nature Park with hiking, climbing, and caving tours.
The 2026 edition of the Pfingstfest Elbersberg runs on Pentecost Saturday and Sunday. It opens on Saturday afternoon with the tapping of the first beer keg, followed by catering, live music, and socialising in the festival tent.
Sunday is dedicated to the morning pint with brass music and a family-friendly day programme. The event serves to finance the club work of the Elbersberg Volunteer Fire Brigade — an important social institution in the 200-inhabitant district of Pottenstein.
