The largest walking pilgrimage to Altötting on Pentecost

The Pentecost Pilgrimage Munich-Rosenheim to Altötting is one of Bavaria's most important Marian pilgrimages. Every year, thousands of pilgrims from the greater Munich area and the Rosenheim region set out on foot to the Bavarian National Shrine of Altötting on Pentecost, whose Black Madonna has been venered in the Chapel of Grace since the 15th century.

Several groups, one common entry

The pilgrimage is organized into groups that are on the road for between two and four days. Pilgrims start on different days depending on their home deanery: longer routes begin on Friday or Saturday, shorter ones on Sunday. All groups meet on Whit Monday in the pilgrimage town of Heiligenstatt to then enter Altötting together – with flags, traditional costumes, and pilgrimage crosses.

Motto 2026: »Transitus – Transition«

Each edition has its own spiritual motto. In 2026, the pilgrimage is under the motto »Transitus – Transition«, a theme that connects the spiritual idea of pilgrimage – setting out, being on the way, and arriving – with current questions of change, upheaval, and new beginnings. The solemn festival mass in the Basilica of St. Anna in Altötting will be led by Father Christoph Lentz.

Tradition between popular piety and experience

The Pentecost Pilgrimage to Altötting is deeply rooted in the popular piety of Old Bavaria. Many families have participated for generations – young people often start as companions, later as precentors, singers, or luggage carriers. Songs are sung along the way, the Rosary is prayed, and stations with devotions are held. Overnight stays are in parish halls, school gymnasiums, or with host families along the route.

Altötting – Bavaria's Marian Center

Altötting, in the Upper Bavarian district of the same name, has been a spiritual center of attraction for millions of pilgrims for over 500 years. The Chapel of Grace with the Black Madonna, the Basilica of St. Anna, the Collegiate Church, and the spacious Chapel Square form an ensemble that shapes Bavaria religiously like hardly any other place. The Pentecost Pilgrimage Munich-Rosenheim is one of the largest communal events of the church year here every year.

Pentecost Pilgrimage Altötting — edition 2026

The 2026 edition starts, depending on the group, on Friday, May 22, 2026, and ends on Whit Monday, May 25, 2026, with the solemn joint entry into Altötting.
