Traditional conclusion of the Nienburg Scheibenschießen with jacket potatoes, award ceremony, and honouring of marksmen
The Pellkartoffelessen Nienburg is a specifically Nienburg tradition that does not occur in this form anywhere else in Lower Saxony. Pellkartoffeln (jacket potatoes) — potatoes cooked in their skins, peeled at the table, and eaten with various side dishes — are a North German folk dish that has been elevated here to the festive framework of a civic tradition.
The Pellkartoffelessen is the traditional conclusion of the Nienburg Scheibenschießen — the major civic marksmen's festival that shapes the city every year from the end of June to the beginning of July. With the Pellkartoffelessen on the Wednesday after the weekend, the festival week ends, and the citizen companies take stock of their shooting, honour their best, and celebrate together one last time.
6:00 PM: Opening in the festival tent by the officer and non-commissioned officer corps of the citizen companies. Welcome by the Mayor of the City of Nienburg/Weser. Serving of jacket potatoes with side dishes such as quark, herring, bacon, and various sauces. During the meal, there is a convivial atmosphere with short table speeches.
Subsequently: Festive award ceremony for the best marksmen of the Scheibenschießen. The individual citizen companies announce their winners, the city presents trophies and certificates, and the royal court is particularly honoured. Also included is the honouring of participants in the Stadtradeln — the nationwide campaign for more cycling, in which Nienburg participates every year.
The Pellkartoffelessen is more than a communal meal: it is a grown piece of civic identity that connects the city of Nienburg with its citizen companies. Here, the volunteer marksmen, the city representatives, and the invited citizens come together to conclude a festival week and express gratitude for successful tradition. This combination of popular appeal (jacket potatoes) and dignity (award ceremony) is typical of the mix of civic simplicity and festive ritual that characterises Nienburg.
