Parish festival of the Catholic parish St. Josef in the Essen district of Frintrop
On the weekend of September 12/13, 2026, the Catholic Parish of St. Josef will celebrate its annual Parish Festival around St. Josef Church in the Essen district of Frintrop. For generations, the parish festival has been the largest community festival in the northwest of Essen — and an important meeting point for the residents of the four districts that make up the parish: Bedingrade, Frintrop, Gerschede, and Schönebeck.
The Parish of St. Josef forms a geographically and socially connected unit in the northwest of the city of Essen. The four districts of Bedingrade, Frintrop, Gerschede, Schönebeck are all districts connected to the transition to the Lower Rhine and Münsterland regions — thus a rather rural, quiet corner of Essen. The parish brings these areas together ecclesiastically. The parish festival on September 12/13 is the weekend when all parishioners see each other.
The typical program of a German parish festival:
The exact detailed program for 2026 will be announced in the parish newsletter and on st-josef-essen.de.
Essen-Frintrop is a rather small district in the northwest of the city with around 4,500 inhabitants. Characterized by single-family homes, gardens, and a village-like atmosphere, Frintrop is one of the quietest parts of Essen. St. Josef Church is its architectural and social center — the parish festival makes this central function visible.
Parish festivals have a special charm — they are neither commercial nor touristy. They are community festivals in the truest sense: neighbors meet, families sit at beer tables, children run across the meadow. Anyone living in Bedingrade, Frintrop, Gerschede, or Schönebeck should mark the date on their calendar. And those coming from the rest of Essen will get to know a quiet, often overlooked district — and a proven piece of Catholic community life in the Ruhr area.
The annual parish festival is the social highlight of the parish community. Festive service on Sunday morning, followed by Frühschoppen and family program. Stalls of parish groups around the church.
Free admission. Food and tombola tickets for a fee.
