Parish Festivals in the Eifel

Parish festivals have a long tradition in the Catholic regions of Germany. In many ways, they are the spiritual and social heart of a village community: they combine the liturgical high feast of the church patron or another religious occasion with the social gathering of the entire community. In Oberkail, in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm, the parish festival is a fixed date in the summer calendar.

Liturgical Opening

The festival traditionally begins with a solemn High Mass in the parish church. The church choir, brass band, or a string ensemble accompanies the service. Afterwards, the congregation moves to the parish hall, often with a blessing for good weather or a small procession, where the social part begins.

Social Main Part

Beer tent benches are set up on the parish grounds, and catering stands are organized. The offerings include bratwurst, schnitzel, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), grilled spit-roasted pork (Spießbraten), along with beer, wine, coffee, and a large selection of homemade cakes from the homes of the parish community. Children will find play activities, a bouncy castle, face painting, and craft sessions.

Musical Program

A local music band, a marching band, or a male choir provides musical entertainment. Often, there is also a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses and sponsors — the proceeds go to the work of the parish community or a specific charitable project.

Eifel Association Culture

What makes the Pfarrfest Oberkail special is the close integration of the associations. The parish council, KJG, women's and men's groups, shooting club, sports club — everyone gets involved, whether with catering, setup and dismantling, music, or the children's program. This association culture is a hallmark of the Eifel and makes the parish festival a true community experience.
