Berlin's pan-African cultural and music festival in Treptow-Köpenick — from the African community for the whole city
The Panafrican Festival Berlin, or PANA for short, originated in 2019 from a simple observation: Berlin has a growing, diverse African community — but until then, no dedicated pan-African festival curated by the community itself. Founder Mick Richard Nahimana, together with Julie Gossart, designed the festival as an alternative to folkloric clichés: not an "Africa world," but stories, sounds, and artists from 54 countries and their global diaspora.
By 2025, PANA will have held six editions. Another edition is planned for 2026 — the exact dates will be announced via the festival website and the partner organization Musicboard Berlin. Based on experience, the festival usually takes place on a weekend in October. The venue for recent editions is the Baergarten at Schnellerstraße 137 in Niederschöneweide (Treptow-Köpenick) — a spacious area directly on the Spree river, hosting open-air concerts, markets, and workshops.
PANA explicitly sees itself as a "Community Movement" rather than just a music festival. Program items include live concerts with artists from West, East, and Southern Africa, as well as the global diaspora, dance performances, art installations, and exhibitions, workshops on topics such as anti-racism, empowerment, and East African history, and a food court serving pan-African cuisine. Over 120 artist collaborations are reported per edition.
The festival is supported by Kiosk Open Tiny e. V., coordinated by Mimosa Management. Structural funding comes from Musicboard Berlin, responsible for promoting pop and live music in Berlin; PANA also collaborates with over 60 partner organizations in Berlin and internationally — from the Goethe-Institut to Berlin associations and African cultural centers.
Schöneweide was an industrial site for decades and has been developing a new cultural profile in recent years as "Schöneweide hipsterizes." PANA fits this development: a festival located away from the inner S-Bahn ring, in a district with great cultural diversity within the state of Berlin (city-state). The Baergarten directly on the Spree offers the right mix of urban space and waterfront location.
The Panafrican Festival Berlin is planning its seventh edition in 2026; an official date confirmation is still pending at this time. The festival usually communicates its lineup about three months before the event. Based on previous years, a weekend in October is expected at the Baergarten Schöneweide — featuring a main stage, a food court with pan-African cuisines, and an area for workshops and art.
The organizer remains Mick Richard Nahimana with the Kiosk Open Tiny e. V. team; structurally supported by Musicboard Berlin.
A binding program is not yet available at this time. Updates will be announced on panafestberlin.org and via social media.
