Traditional Easter bonfire to kick off the outdoor season in Carolinensiel-Harlesiel
The Easter bonfire is one of Northern Germany's oldest spring customs. As early as pre-Christian times, people lit fires on significant days to drive away winter spirits and promote the growth of crops and livestock. With Christianization, many of these fires were integrated into the Easter cycle and have survived as folk customs to this day. In East Frisia and along the North Sea coast, the Easter bonfire is a self-evident spring ritual.
In Carolinensiel, the Easter bonfire is lit between the Schützenhaus and the primary school – a central, easily accessible location. Families from the East Frisian harbor town gather in the evening; children often experience the spectacle for the first time, while adults meet neighbours and acquaintances they haven't seen over the long winter. With the Easter bonfire, the outdoor season unofficially begins for Carolinensiel – cafés, museums, and harbour activities slowly readjust to tourism.
The accompanying programme is deliberately simple: grilled bratwurst, cold drinks, perhaps a mulled wine (Punsch) against the still cool spring evening air. The Carolinensiel-Harlesiel GmbH coordinates the event in cooperation with local clubs and the fire brigade, which ensures the safe execution of the fire.
The Easter bonfire also symbolically flips a switch: the quiet Carolinensiel of winter transforms back into a lively harbour town with outdoor dining, harbour activities, mudflat walks (Wattführungen), and tourist events. The outdoor season is open, and in the following weeks, a packed programme calendar follows right through to autumn.
In 2026, the Carolinensiel-Harlesiel GmbH will again coordinate the event together with clubs and the fire brigade. The programme remains deliberately simple: fire, food, conviviality. It is precisely this simplicity that constitutes the charm of the Easter bonfire.
The local fire brigade will be present at the Easter bonfire to ensure its safe execution. The burning area is clearly demarcated, and families with children maintain a safe distance.
The exact programme for 2026, including times, will be published by Carolinensiel-Harlesiel GmbH before Easter.
