Amselkerwe in Knöringen from May 8th to 11th, 2026 — traditional Palatinate Kerwe with barrel tapping on the Kerweplatz and festively decorated community hall
The Kerwe is the Southwestern German variant of the Kirchweihfest — a medieval festival celebrating the anniversary of a church's consecration, which over the centuries has evolved into a village-wide folk festival. In the Palatinate, the Kerwe is a core part of village festival culture — every Palatinate village has its own Kerwe with its own customs and often its own characteristic name. “Amselkerwe” in Knöringen is one of these village-specific names.
Knöringen is a small wine-growing village in the Edenkoben administrative district with about 1,300 inhabitants. Like many Palatinate villages in this region, it is characterized by viticulture — the vineyards on the edge of the Palatinate Forest primarily produce white wines (Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder) and some rosé wines.
The venues for the Kerwe are the Kerweplatz (former schoolyard, now the central village square) and the community hall, which is festively decorated during the Kerwe. These two spaces — the outdoor area for the festival tent, stalls, and stages, and the indoor area for dancing, music, and club celebrations — together form the Kerwe infrastructure. The festival tent offers beer service, Palatinate specialties (Saumagen, Bratwurst, Flammkuchen, Wurstsalat), wine from Knöringen wineries, and club stalls.
The barrel tapping is the ritual element of every Palatinate Kerwe. Usually on Friday or Saturday evening, the first barrel of beer (or wine) is tapped by a representative of the municipality or the festival committee — a ceremonial moment that marks the official start of the festival. A welcome speech, a toast, and the first glass are often distributed.
The Amselkerwe runs from Friday, May 8th to Monday, May 11th, 2026 — four days of festival activities. This four-day structure (Fri–Mon) is the classic Palatinate Kerwe format. Friday (Opening), Saturday (Main Festival Day with stage program), Sunday (Family Day with church service and Frühschoppen), Monday (Closing Day with Kerwebeerdigung — a humorous rite with which the Kerwe is symbolically concluded).
The four-day Kerwe follows the classic Palatinate Kerwe pattern: Friday opening, Saturday main festival day, Sunday family day, Monday closing day with Kerwebeerdigung.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in advance. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
