Atmospheric Christmas market in the historic old town of Oppenheim on the third Advent weekend
The Oppenheim Christmas Market is one of Rheinhessen's most charming Advent markets. Unlike the large, commercial markets in Mainz or Frankfurt, Oppenheim focuses on a family-friendly, intimate character that puts the historic old town and local clubs at the center.
The venue is the central market square with extensions into Krämerstraße and around St. Catherine's Church, one of the most important Gothic churches on the Middle Rhine. Wooden huts house the stalls, decorated with fir green, fairy lights, and poinsettias. The half-timbered facades of the old town give the market its distinctive atmosphere.
The stalls offer a classic Christmas market selection: mulled wine – in Oppenheim, naturally often brewed from local Riesling or Spätburgunder – hot apple wine, children's punch, roasted almonds, chestnuts, lard pastries, crêpes, potato pancakes, bratwurst, tarte flambée, and hearty regional specialties. Sweet classics like gingerbread, stollen, Christmas tree pastries, and handmade pralines complete the offering.
Several arts and crafts stalls offer Christmas decorations, wood carvings, ceramics, felt goods, handmade jewelry, candles, nativity figures, and gift ideas for the Advent season. Local clubs, church communities, and the Oppenheim business association run additional stalls.
The cultural supporting program includes choir and brass band performances in front of St. Catherine's Church, Advent concerts within the church itself, Christmas stories for children, and occasional appearances by St. Nicholas. Guided city tours through the festively decorated old town and into the famous cellar labyrinth offer additional program items.
The Oppenheim Christmas Market is a family festival with a local character. Visitors from Mainz, Worms, and the surrounding region enjoy coming to the small town to experience the quiet, romantic atmosphere of a small-town Christmas market, far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities.
The 2026 edition continues the successful concept of a family-friendly small-town Christmas market. Free admission, cultural supporting program with concerts in St. Catherine's Church and tours of the cellar labyrinth.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the City of Oppenheim in the autumn. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
