European Heritage Day in one of Central Germany's most monument-rich cities
Anyone strolling through Halle (Saale) sees it at first glance: Bauhaus architecture next to Art Nouveau, Wilhelminian-era villas next to socialist prefabricated buildings, medieval town centers next to industrial architecture. The city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt is one of Central Germany's most monument-rich cities β with a history as a salt city, university city (Martin Luther University since 1694), industrial location, and cultural center.
The Open Monument Day is Germany's contribution to European Heritage Day, coordinated by the German Foundation for Monument Protection. It has taken place annually on the second Sunday in September since 1993. In Halle, the city administration coordinates over 20 monument sites that are freely accessible on this day β many of them only on this specific day of the year.
The Halle program typically includes: the Historic Stadtbad (Art Nouveau pool, otherwise inaccessible), the Halle-Diemitz Tram Depot with its historic tram collection, the Nord Water Tower, the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the UNESCO World Heritage-adjacent Franckesche Stiftungen, the Wilhelm-Friedemann-Bach House, several churches, industrial monuments, and special residential buildings. Free guided tours, lectures, workshops, and special exhibitions are offered.
Saxony-Anhalt is one of Germany's states richest in monuments. Three UNESCO World Heritage sites in the state (Bauhaus Dessau, Luther Memorials, Naumburg Cathedral), plus Quedlinburg as a UNESCO World Heritage city, and countless industrial monuments from the GDR and pre-GDR era shape its identity. Open Monument Day is the once-a-year opportunity to experience this heritage in an unusually deep way β Halle is one of the locations with the greatest program density.
