Bauhaus to Touch — Once a Year for Everyone
In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, in the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau, lies one of the most important architectural centers of modernity: the Bauhaus Dessau. Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer, and Mies van der Rohe led not only a school here from 1925 to 1932 but invented an entire design language. The main building, the Masters' Houses, the Törten settlement, the gallery access houses, the Steel House, the Consumers' Building — all UNESCO World Heritage, all accessible, and usually requiring tickets. On the Open Monument Day, this changes: all World Heritage Sites of the Foundation are freely accessible.
2026 — Materials as the Theme
Under the title "Concrete Brick Metal", the Foundation is putting the Bauhaus materials in the spotlight for the 2026 anniversary season. Architectural walks will lead through the Dessau-Törten settlement (Walter Gropius's housing estate for working-class families), Hannes Meyer's gallery access houses, and the newly renovated Steel House — a prototype for industrially produced housing. The starting point is the Consumers' Building. In addition, the project "Brick / Roof / Power" focuses on the historical employment office.
Format and Target Audience
The day is for everyone: families, architecture buffs, day-trippers from Berlin and Leipzig (90 min by train) who want to walk through World Heritage sites without an entrance fee once a year. Guided tours are free, and discussions with restorers and scientists are the specialty of this day — not a typical museum day, but a workshop atmosphere.
