Family Day of the Krefeld Professional Fire Brigade with Vehicle Demonstrations and Activities for Children
The Open Day of the Krefeld Professional Fire Brigade will take place in 2026 on Sunday, September 6, at Fire Station 4 on the street 'Zur Feuerwache 4' (Postal Code 47805). The station will become an open family program for a day — insights into the work of the professional fire brigade, modern emergency technology, and the daily lives of firefighters.
The professional fire brigade's fleet of vehicles is the main attraction: fire engines (LF), turntable ladders (DLK), rescue vehicles (RW), water tenders (TLF), ambulances, and special vehicles will be on display. During the day, demonstrations by the emergency services will take place — typically:
The day is an experience for children: they can spray with the fire hose, try on a firefighter's helmet, ride up in the turntable ladder (with a firefighter), and participate in craft and drawing stations with the fire safety educator. At some open days, there is also the mascot 'Firefighter Dog Sammy' or similar children's program highlights.
A central value of the day: the encounter between citizens and the professional fire brigade. Firefighters answer questions — from 'How do you become a firefighter?' to 'How much does a turntable ladder cost?' to 'What do you do when no one is home?'. This direct interaction builds trust and promotes understanding of the need for professional fire protection and rescue structures.
Typical offerings include: sausages from the grill, coffee and cake, a drinks stand, and usually a bouncy castle for the youngest visitors. Members of the Krefeld volunteer fire brigade often support the day with catering and entertainment.
Krefeld is an independent city on the left bank of the Lower Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia, about 25 km northwest of Düsseldorf. With around 230,000 inhabitants, Krefeld is traditionally known as the 'Velvet and Silk City' — the textile industry shaped the city in the 19th century. Today, the chemical industry site in Uerdingen plays a central role. The Krefeld Professional Fire Brigade operates several fire stations — Fire Station 4 is one of them.
The Open Day is free of charge — admission is free. Families from Krefeld, the Viersen district, and the northern Rhineland traditionally use the date for a Sunday outing.
The 2026 edition opens Fire Station 4 for a Sunday for citizens. Live demonstrations, vehicle tours, children's program, and information on fire protection, first aid, and firefighting careers form the program.
Note: The exact schedule will be published shortly before the date on the official Instagram and Facebook pages of the Krefeld Professional Fire Brigade (@berufsfeuerwehrmannschaft).
Free admission. Food and drinks at the stands are individually priced (proceeds usually benefit the fire brigade youth or similar club activities).
By car: A57 or A40 exit Krefeld, then follow signs to Fire Station 4. By public transport: Krefeld tram or bus to nearby stops — line information on the Krefeld public transport website.
Sunday, September 6, 2026, typically from approx. 10 AM to 5 PM (exact times will be announced by the Krefeld Professional Fire Brigade shortly before the date on Instagram/Facebook). Free admission.
Come in the morning for shorter queues at the demonstrations. Sturdy footwear is recommended for children (the hose spray experience can get wet). Follow the Krefeld Professional Fire Brigade on Instagram (@berufsfeuerwehrmannschaft) and Facebook for current program details.
