Summer cinema in the outdoor pool — the Witten-Annen tradition
The Stadtwerke Open-Air-Kino Witten is one of the most beautiful summer cinemas in the southern Ruhr area. For three weeks in August/September, the Freibad Witten-Annen (Herdecker Str. 66) transforms into an open-air cinema with a large screen at the edge of the pool. The organizer is Stadtwerke Witten — the municipal utility company, which demonstrates its commitment to urban and recreational life with this event series.
Program Concept — Families and Adults
The cinema program follows a proven family concept:
- Daily children's matinee from 4:00 PM — free family fun at a low price (€4). Programs from the children's and animation film categories, often German premieres.
- Evening screenings Thursday to Sunday from approx. 7:00 PM — current feature films, classics, summer hits.
The format „enjoy pleasant summer evenings in a cozy pool atmosphere with exciting, funny, and interesting films“ aptly describes its uniqueness: fairy lights, deck chairs, pool sounds in the background, summer ambiance.
2026 Program — Season to be announced in summer
Stadtwerke Witten typically publishes the exact program in spring/early summer 2026. The 2025 season ran from August 21 to September 7 — the 2026 season is expected to take place in a similar timeframe in late August / early September. Exact date confirmation via kino.stadtwerke-witten.de.
Freibad Witten-Annen — the summer stage
The Freibad Witten-Annen is located in the Witten district of Annen on Herdecker Straße. During the cinema season, the pool area is repurposed: deck chairs and cushions are set up in front of the pool, and the large screen is placed at the head of the pool. This combination of outdoor pool atmosphere and cinema experience is unique in the region.
Witten — University city in the southern Ruhr area
Witten (approx. 100,000 inhabitants) is a district town in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis on the southern edge of the Ruhr area, directly on the Ruhr river. The city is home to the Universität Witten/Herdecke (Germany's first private university, founded in 1982) and is accessible via the S-Bahn line S5 in 15 minutes from Dortmund and 30 minutes from Essen.
