Open Air am Berg — Eichstätt Festival Culture for Over 30 Years
Anyone who frequents festivals in Upper Bavaria and neighboring Middle Franconia has known »Open Air am Berg« for a long time. The venue is the quarry at the so-called »Elefantenbuckel«, a hill above the episcopal city of Eichstätt in the Altmühltal Nature Park. For two days, around 30 bands will perform here on the two main stages (»Elephantstage« and »Joke-Stage«), supplemented by a smaller stage for newcomers.
What Makes Open Air am Berg Special
- Volunteerism as a Foundation: The festival is run by an association entirely through volunteer work. Programming, setup and teardown, catering – everything is in the hands of hundreds of volunteers from the Altmühltal region.
- Stylistic Variety: Rock, Punk, Metal, Ska, Alternative, Balkan, EDM, and Singer-Songwriter alternate on the stages – not a pure genre festival, but a deliberately mixed program.
- Altmühltal Natural Scenery: The quarry above the Altmühl river gives the event its own intimate atmosphere – Open Air am Berg is considered one of the most scenically beautiful festivals in Bavaria.
- Family-Friendly Format: With a manageable audience size, short distances, and a free camp, the festival remains far from mega-festival status even during peak times.
Location: Eichstätt in the Eichstätt District
Eichstätt is a bishop's seat, university town, and the gateway to the Altmühltal Nature Park – located in the Eichstätt district, in the administrative region of Upper Bavaria. Open Air am Berg carries this cultural mix – baroque city, student audience, hiking crowds – audibly within its audience.
