Anniversary neighborhood festival for the 60th anniversary of the Freizeitheim Vahrenwald – with a large exhibition and program starting at 2 PM
The Freizeitheim Vahrenwald opened in the mid-1960s – at a time when the state capital Hanover was building a dense network of municipal meeting places in its districts. These Freizeitheime (community centers) pursued and continue to pursue the goal of offering low-threshold educational and cultural activities close to residents: courses, workshops, concerts, club rooms, counseling. In their current form, they are a nationally recognized model of open neighborhood cultural work.
Vahrenwald is a district north of the city center with a mixed population, many residential areas, and a distinct local club landscape. For six decades, the Freizeitheim Vahrenwald has been the central meeting point for neighborhood culture, education, and neighborly encounters. It houses courses for all age groups, club rooms, event halls, and counseling services.
The anniversary neighborhood festival on September 20, 2026, brings together the house's entire program portfolio and the neighborhood community. Live music on a specially erected stage, hands-on activities for families, events by local clubs, culinary offerings, and a dedicated exhibition on the history of the house form the core of the program. The exhibition documents six decades of neighborhood work with photos, posters, documents, and interviews.
The festival begins on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM and runs into the evening. Program items follow in quick succession, admission is free.
The festival is designed as a meeting format between the neighborhood population, clubs, initiatives, and the Freizeitheim itself. Visitors from the district and surrounding areas are expected, as well as former users of the house returning for the anniversary.
The program items are designed in collaboration with the house's clubs, initiatives, course instructors, and artists. Thus, the festival reflects the programmatic diversity of the Freizeitheim.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in August and September. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
