Bavarian ambiance on the Danish border — with the fire brigade music corps from Højer (DK)
The Oktoberfest has long since spread beyond Munich to become a North German phenomenon — a homage to Bavarian festival culture, celebrated in club festivals, sports halls, and community centers from Flensburg to the Wadden Sea. Großenwiehe, a municipality with a good 1,700 inhabitants in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, is one of those places that has firmly integrated this tradition into its annual calendar. 2026 will see the 4th edition of the Großenwiehe Oktoberfest — organized by the DRK-Ortsverein Großenwiehe (Local Red Cross Association).
The Festsaal Großenwiehe (Großenwiehe Festival Hall) is decorated for the evening like a Bavarian Wiesn: blue and white pennant chains, wooden benches, beer barrels, Maypoles, Lederhosen, and Dirndls. The menu features classics — pork knuckle, pretzels, Obatzda, suckling pig, accompanied by Maß (liter steins) of beer. All this in a region that is actually known for its kale festivals, its Grünkohl (kale stew), and its North Sea cuisine. That's precisely the charm: Oktoberfest in Großenwiehe is a conscious exception, a commitment to joie de vivre that transcends regional borders.
A special feature that no one would expect in Bavaria: the musical accompaniment is provided by the Feuerwehrmusikzug aus Højer (Fire Brigade Music Corps from Højer), the neighboring Danish community just a few kilometers north of the German border. High-energy music, Wiesn hits, Schlager — all performed in a German-Danish tradition. This makes the Oktoberfest in Großenwiehe a bridging moment for the German-Danish border region, where clubs have been cooperating across the border for decades.
The Deutsches Rotes Kreuz, Ortsverein Großenwiehe (German Red Cross, Local Association Großenwiehe), organizes the festival. The proceeds finance the association's activities — first aid services, youth work, and support for elderly and needy citizens of the community. Those who attend the Oktoberfest thus directly support local social engagement.
Großenwiehe is located in the Amt Schafflund, a rural area with small villages, geest ridges, and fields. The landscape here between Flensburg and Tønder is open and vast, the sky often large and windy. To celebrate a Bavarian festival in this environment has something beautiful and unifying — it shows that identity is not regionally confined, but that new traditions can be invented.
The 4th Oktoberfest Großenwiehe will take place on Friday, October 23, 2026, in the Festsaal Großenwiehe. The DRK-Ortsverein Großenwiehe (Local Red Cross Association) invites you to the fourth edition. The Feuerwehrmusikzug aus Højer (DK) (Fire Brigade Music Corps from Højer, Denmark) will provide the musical entertainment. Bavarian flair, hearty Wiesn hits, and specialties are expected.
