Franconian late-summer Kärwa in the municipality of Oberhaid in the Bamberg district
In the Bamberg district, where there are around 260 Kärwas, the Kirchweih is the heart of village life. The Oberhaid Kirchweih in the main village of Oberhaid, on the edge of the Main Valley, joins this vibrant Franconian tradition: a multi-day folk festival that brings the entire village community together.
The celebration follows the tried-and-tested Franconian Kirchweih custom: the Kärwabaum is erected, beer flows in the festival tent and inns, accompanied by Franconian specialties, brass and dance music, and convivial gatherings over several days. The Kärwa is an occasion for homecoming, reunion, and village festival all at once.
Oberhaid is a municipality with several districts, each maintaining its own Kirchweih: in addition to the Oberhaid Kärwa at the end of August, Staffelbach (end of July) and Unterhaid (beginning of September) also celebrate their Kirchweihen — a packed Kärwa year in the Bamberg region.
From August 28 to 31, 2026, the main village of Oberhaid will celebrate its major Kärwa. For four days, the Kärwabaum, festival tent, beer, Franconian specialties, and brass or dance music will characterize the village.
The Oberhaid Kärwa is part of a busy Kirchweih year in the municipality: Staffelbach celebrates from July 24 to 27, 2026, and Unterhaid from September 5 to 7, 2026.
Detailed program and band names will be announced by the local Kärwaboum/Kirchweihgesellschaft (Kirchweih organizing committee).
