Open-air gallery on Saarland's highest mountain — Assumption Day with 50 artists
Inspired by the Parisian artists' quarter Montmartre, Tholey has established its own format: Schaumberg-Montmartre. Once a year on the Catholic holiday of Mariä Himmelfahrt (Assumption Day, August 15th), the Schaumberg plateau opens its doors to artists and craftspeople from the Saarland and Palatinate region. Approximately 50 exhibitors display their works in a large open-air gallery — and demonstrate their craft: Visitors can watch artists at work, have their portrait drawn, or commission a custom piece.
The range of works is impressive: Portrait drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings dominate, alongside works in wood, glass, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry. Many artists work live before the eyes of the visitors — a format that fosters interaction between the public and the creators. No admission fee, no booth fee for visitors: Purchases are voluntary but appreciated.
The market is traditionally accompanied musically by the band Blechhaufen — a Saarland brass ensemble that provides the right atmosphere for a relaxed open-air gallery with a mix of classical, jazz, and folk music. Performances are spread throughout the day and are included with admission.
The mayor or their deputy (most recently Elisabeth Biwer) officially opens the day, often with a brief welcome address and an honor for the long-standing oldest or youngest exhibitor. Afterward, the plateau fills with visitors from Saarland, the Palatinate, Lorraine, and Luxembourg.
Tholey itself has a cultural background that fits the concept: The Benedictine Abbey of St. Mauritius is one of Germany's oldest abbeys (founded likely around 634). Since 2020, stained glass windows by Gerhard Richter adorn the abbey church — an occasion for artistic pilgrimage beyond the Saarland. Schaumberg-Montmartre fits seamlessly into this cultural atmosphere of the Bohnental valley.
The market utilizes the entire Schaumberg plateau at the foot of the Schaumberg Tower, a 36-meter-high observation tower. Early arrivals can park at the plateau parking lot; later arrivals should use the shuttle service from Tholey town center. Cafés and snack stands cater to visitors between the artist booths.
The anniversary edition, the 21st, builds on the tradition that has grown since 2004. The municipality of Tholey and the Tourist Information office coordinate artist selection, logistics, and promotion. Artists interested in participating can apply through the Tourist Information office.
The final artist list for 2026 will be published a few weeks before the event on tholey.de.
Free admission. Artworks range from approximately €20 (postcards, small drawings) to several hundred euros (oil paintings, high-quality crafts), depending on the artist.
By Car: A1 (Saarbrücken–Trier) Tholey exit, then follow signs for Schaumberg. Limited parking at the plateau; otherwise, park in Tholey town center and use the shuttle.
By Train: St. Wendel station (RB73), Bus 605 to Tholey, shuttle to the plateau.
Saturday, August 15, 2026, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Free.
Cafés and snack stands on the plateau (sausages, crêpes, coffee, cake, ice cream).
Climb the Schaumberg Tower — the view of the Bohnental valley is spectacular in summer, often visible far into the Palatinate and Lorraine on clear days. Afterward, visit the Tholey Abbey and its Gerhard Richter windows (on foot via the pilgrimage path or by car/shuttle).
