Traditional Kerb in the Schlossgartenhof of Ober-Saulheim with Rhenish-Hessian wines, live music, and rides
The Kerb, short for Kirchweih (church consecration festival) in Rhenish-Hessian dialect, is more than just a festival – it is lived identity. In Ober-Saulheim, the eastern district of the municipality of Saulheim in the Alzey-Worms district, this tradition is cherished with particular dedication. The Schlossgartenhof, a picturesque courtyard around the Weingut Dörrschuck at Untergasse 9, provides the backdrop for four days of festivities. Here, the architecture of the historic estate combines with the relaxed atmosphere of a Rhenish-Hessian village festival.
The focus, of course, is on the region's wine. The vintners serve their own wines, from dry Rieslings, Silvaner, and Pinot Gris to fruity rosé wines and robust Pinot Noirs. The wine is accompanied by Rhenish-Hessian specialties: Spundekäs with pretzels, Handkäs mit Musik (cheese with onions and vinaigrette), Saumagen (stuffed pork stomach), grilled sausages, and sweet treats like Quetschekuche (plum cake) or Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart). Cover bands, party music, and local DJs take turns on stage, ensuring the festival grounds remain lively well into the night.
The rides and stalls are a special attraction for families. Children's carousels, shooting galleries, and small roller coasters make children's eyes light up, while adults gather in the festival tent. The Kerb days follow a set rhythm, with the opening on Friday evening, the peak on Saturday and Sunday, and a relaxed conclusion on Kerbe-Monday. Those who want to discover Rheinhessen away from the major tourist routes will find an authentic piece of village culture here.
Saulheim is located between Mainz, Worms, and Alzey in the heart of Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine-growing region. Its connection to the A 63 motorway (Saulheim exit) and the regular services of the S-Bahn Rhein-Main line S 8 from Mainz to Saulheim make travel uncomplicated.
