Advent Magic in the Half-Timbered Old Town
The Nostalgic Christmas Market Hattingen is considered one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Ruhr area. From Sunday, November 23 to Tuesday, December 22, 2026 — for a whole month — the historic Kirchplatz (church square) around the St. George's Church transforms into a festively illuminated Advent stage. The old town of Hattingen, with its hundreds of half-timbered houses from the 14th to 18th centuries, provides the perfect historical backdrop.
What Makes the Market Special
The concept is deliberately focused on Nostalgia:
- Nostalgic Carousel — a historic carousel from the 19th century in the center of the church square
- Arts and Crafts Stalls in traditional construction with handcrafted gifts
- Mulled Wine and Punch in charming mugs (with deposit)
- Festive Foods — potato pancakes, bratwurst, crêpes, chestnuts, gingerbread
- Romantic Illumination of the half-timbered houses and the church square
- Christmas Music on the market stage — choirs, brass ensembles, children's songs
Open Shopping Sunday on December 13
On Sunday, December 13, 2026, the Hattingen city center will be open for shopping: the shops will be open for relaxed Advent shopping, complementing the Christmas market. The combined concept of market and shopping makes December 13 the highlight of the Advent season in Hattingen.
St. George's Church and Hattingen Old Town
The St. George's Church is Hattingen's Protestant city church and dates back to the 14th century in its current form (with older predecessor buildings). It forms the spiritual and architectural center of the old town. Around it are over 150 listed half-timbered houses — one of the most densely preserved half-timbered old towns in northwestern Germany. The combination of medieval architecture, illuminated shop windows, and a nostalgic Advent market has been a tourist attraction for the southern Ruhr area for years.
Hattingen — Southern Ruhr Area on the Niederbergisch-Märkisch
Hattingen (around 55,000 inhabitants) is located in the Ennepe-Ruhr district on the southern edge of the Ruhr area, directly on the Ruhr River. The city is known for its exceptional half-timbered old town and the Henrichshütte (former steelworks, now LWL Industrial Museum). Hattingen is easily accessible from Bochum, Essen, Wuppertal, and the entire Ruhr area — the Christmas market attracts a broad regional audience accordingly.
