Advent tradition – Saint Nicholas arrives by ship on the Lippe
The idea of Saint Nicholas arriving in Lünen by ship on the Lippe combines the medieval image of Saint Nicholas of Myra (bishop and patron saint of sailors) with Lünen's geographical profile, as few Ruhr area cities are situated directly on a navigable river. The Lippe – one of the Rhine's largest right-bank tributaries – flows right through Lünen and is connected to the Datteln-Hamm Canal. Over the years, this has allowed a tradition to develop that is unique in its form.
Around 5:30 PM, the town community awaits Saint Nicholas at the cascade stairs of the Lippezentrum – an architecturally striking turning point on the Lippe riverbank with steps leading directly to the water. Torch-swimmers accompany the ship up from the Lippe meadows, fanfares from local brass bands announce the arrival, and the ship docks to the applause of the gathered crowd. St. Nicholas comes ashore with his bishop's staff, mitre, and helpers.
Afterwards, a procession of lights forms: from the Lippezentrum through the Sternengasse (a small side street in the city center with special light decorations) to the Alten Markt. Brass bands play Christmas carols, children with lanterns accompany the procession, and many citizens spontaneously join in.
The procession ends at the Alten Markt. Here, the town community sings Christmas carols together (classic German Advent songs like “Stille Nacht”, “O du fröhliche”, “Maria durch ein Dornwald ging”), the mayor gives a short Advent address, and children are presented with Stutenkerle (Rhineland-Westphalian sweet pastries for St. Nicholas Day) and small gifts.
The event is more than just a traditional custom: it is an identity builder for a city that has left its industrial past behind and had to develop new traditions. The annual event is supported by the city, the parish, and many volunteers.
Those arriving for the event can also visit the Lünen Christmas market, which runs concurrently in the market square, or take a walk along the Lippe into the meadows.
The 2026 edition continues the beloved Lünen Advent tradition. The city of Lünen, parishes, and volunteers organize the evening together.
