Traditional Kirchweih festival in Niederkirchen near Deidesheim before St. Martin's Day with Palatinate wine and Kerwe customs
While most Palatinate Kerwen take place between May and September, a later tradition has been established in Niederkirchen near Deidesheim: the November Kirchweih, traditionally held just before St. Martin's Day on November 11th. This has a special charm — the vines have been harvested, the wine cellars are full of the must from the new vintage, Federweißer is available everywhere, and the cool evenings invite hearty dishes and robust red wines.
The November Kerwe also follows classic Palatinate customs: raising the Kerwe tree on Friday evening, a "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) on Kerwe Sunday, and the "Kerweredd" (Kerwe speech) in the Palatinate dialect on Kerwe Monday. The Niederkirchen clubs and associations — fire brigade, sports club, singing club, and others — set up stalls, and the festival committee coordinates the program.
In November, the focus in the Palatinate is on the fresh must of the new vintage. Federweißer — the still-fermenting must — is served with food, accompanied by onion cake as a traditional pairing. In addition, Niederkirchen's vintners offer the "Neuer Wein" (new wine), the first clear young wines of the vintage.
Hearty Palatinate autumn cuisine is part of the Herbst-Kerwe: "Saumagen" (pig's stomach) with sauerkraut and fried potatoes, "Leberknödel" (liver dumplings), bratwurst, Palatinate sausage salad, savory pumpkin soups, and Flammkuchen with autumnal toppings. Sweet specialties such as Palatinate gingerbread, chestnuts, and apple cake complete the offering.
The 2026 edition adheres to the proven format: Friday opening, full operation on the weekend, "Frühschoppen" on Kerwe Sunday, and a "blue" Kerwe Monday as a wind-down. Niederkirchen's clubs and vintners shape the festival program.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
