Traditional Palatinate Carnival Parade of the municipality of Neuhofen on Shrove Tuesday
The Neuhofen Carnival Parade on Shrove Tuesday is part of a "Palatinate Carnival Quartet" in the Rheinauen association municipality and surrounding communities, which sets thousands of carnival-goers in motion every year. Mutterstadt, Neuhofen, Waldsee, and Altrip celebrate their respective parades and street carnivals on the same day, sharing the carnival energy of the southern Vorderpfalz.
Shrove Tuesday is the last day of the festive high season before Ash Wednesday. In Palatinate carnival culture, it is the highlight: on this day, the major parade is held simultaneously in many communities, followed by lively street carnival. Anyone who grew up in Neuhofen, Waldsee, Mutterstadt, or Altrip knows this program from childhood.
Like the other parades in the region, the Neuhofen Carnival Parade is rooted in the tradition of Palatinate carnival. Unlike Rhenish carnival (Mainz, Cologne, Düsseldorf), Palatinate carnival is deeply embedded in the local dialect and village customs. Büttenredner (carnival speakers) speak Palatinate dialect, humorously incorporate local events and personalities, and thus preserve a linguistic and cultural tradition that is unique to the Palatinate.
The parade typically includes floats from local clubs, regional carnival societies, music bands, and guards. Sweets, "Strüssjer" (small bouquets), and promotional gifts are thrown into the crowd, and children eagerly collect the thrown items. Carnival-goers line the parade route in colorful costumes.
Neuhofen belongs to the Rheinauen association municipality, along with Altrip, Otterstadt, and Waldsee. With around 6,700 inhabitants, the municipality is one of the medium-sized towns in the Rhein-Pfalz district. Its location between Speyer and Ludwigshafen, on the edge of the Rhine-Aue National Park, shapes its regional identity – which is also reflected in its vibrant carnival tradition.
The 2026 edition continues the traditional Palatinate carnival culture of the municipality of Neuhofen. Carnival-goers from Neuhofen, the neighboring communities of the Rheinauen association municipality, and the Vorderpfalz are expected to experience the parade and then celebrate exuberantly. The local carnival clubs organize the festival on a voluntary basis, in cooperation with the municipality.
