Medieval atmosphere at the castle ruins: Castle picnic on Friday, Castle festival on Saturday
The Neu-Bamberg Castle Festival combines an extraordinary ambiance with a two-day program centered around the Neubamburg castle ruins. On Friday evening, the Castle Picnic starting at 7 PM invites you to an atmospheric prelude – participation is only possible with advance registration. On Saturday, the actual Castle Festival opens at 3 PM with catering, a musical program, and the unique backdrop of the medieval walls high above the Rhenish-Hessian hill country.
The event is organized by the local community of Neu-Bamberg, a small municipality in the Bad Kreuznach association of municipalities, on the border between Naheland and Rhenish Hesse. The Castle Festival is a highlight in the region's summer calendar, attracting visitors from Bad Kreuznach, the Alzey region, and surrounding wine villages.
The Neubamburg Castle, built in the 13th century, was once the seat of the Counts of Sponheim and controlled the trade routes between Mainz and Bingen. It was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years' War and finally destroyed in the War of the Palatinate Succession in 1689. Today, the remains of the walls, a keep, and parts of the curtain wall stand as a striking silhouette above the center of Neu-Bamberg. For the Castle Festival, the area is transformed into a festive meeting place.
Friday evening is reserved for the Castle Picnic. Starting at 7 PM, participants gather for a communal picnic against the backdrop of the castle ruins. Registration is required – the number of participants is limited to ensure an intimate and cozy atmosphere. Registration can be done by phone at 06703-941512 up to six days before the event.
On Saturday, starting at 3 PM, the actual Castle Festival opens its gates. The local community of Neu-Bamberg, local clubs, and volunteers provide catering with regional wines, beer, homemade specialties, coffee, and cake. The castle ruins become a unique concert stage and festival backdrop. Live music, performances by choirs or bands, and child-friendly activities round off the day into the evening.
Neu-Bamberg is located on the eastern edge of the Bad Kreuznach district, on the border with the Alzey-Worms district. The community of around 600 inhabitants belongs to the Bad Kreuznach association of municipalities and is nestled in a landscape of vineyards, orchards, and rolling hills. The wine villages of Frei-Laubersheim, Pleitersheim, and Tiefenthal are located in the immediate vicinity.
The 2026 edition of the Neu-Bamberg Castle Festival is spread over two days: on Friday, June 26, starting at 7 PM, the Castle Picnic will take place (registration by June 21 at 06703-941512), and on Saturday, June 27, starting at 3 PM, the actual Castle Festival opens at the Neubamburg Castle Ruins. The event is organized by the local community of Neu-Bamberg together with local clubs.
As in previous years, the 2026 Castle Festival combines the unique backdrop of the medieval castle ruins with catering, music, and a program for the whole family. The detailed program (music acts, culinary highlights, possible castle tours) will be published a few weeks before the event on the event page of the Bad Kreuznach association of municipalities.
