Wine, Culture, and Encounters in the Vaulted Cellars of the Remstal
Weinstadt in the Rems-Murr district, with over 500 hectares of vineyards, is one of Württemberg's largest wine-growing municipalities. The town was formed in 1975 from the merger of the five wine-growing villages of Beutelsbach, Endersbach, Großheppach, Schnait, and Strümpfelbach – each with its own traditions, cellars, and winemakers. The Nacht der Keller, now in its 23rd edition, is the answer to a simple question: What if these cellars were open to everyone once a year? This idea has evolved into one of Baden-Württemberg's most special wine festivals.
Around 19 wine cellars open their doors, almost all located in the vaulted cellars of old vintner houses. You descend a narrow staircase into a centuries-old stone cellar, where the vintner personally stands by the barrel, pours a glass, and talks about the vineyard site, the vintage, and the soil. In the next house, live music plays – an acoustic duo, a brass quartet, sometimes even a DJ. In another cellar, an artist has exhibited their works; a few houses down, food is being prepared in a courtyard. Entry is free everywhere; you only pay for what you actually consume.
The quiet heart of the Nacht der Keller is the Remstalkellerei in Beutelsbach. This is home to the largest wooden barrel cellar in Southern Germany – a vast space with decades-old oak barrels, illuminated during the festival night. Anyone who sees it understands why the Nacht der Keller is more than just a wine festival: it's a cultural-historical journey through the underground wine world of the Remstal.
To ensure nothing disturbs the enjoyment of a beautiful evening, an affordable shuttle bus for €5 per evening travels between all five districts. The exact routes and stops will be published in July 2026. The concept is clear: leave the car at home, and keep the wine in your glass. The five districts are too close for long drives and too far apart for relaxed strolling – the shuttle is the elegant solution.
Over the years, the Nacht der Keller has earned a firm place in Baden-Württemberg's event calendar. Wine and culture enthusiasts travel from Stuttgart, Heilbronn, Esslingen, and Schwäbisch Gmünd every year. Its charm lies in the mix: no big stage, no major acts, but a decentrally organized neighborhood tour where the real experience comes from many small encounters with vintners, musicians, artists, and other guests.
For its 23rd edition, around 19 vintners, cooperatives, and businesses with wine cellars in all five districts are participating again. A highlight remains the largest wooden barrel cellar in Southern Germany at the Remstalkellerei in Beutelsbach. Flyers with a cellar and program overview, as well as the exact shuttle routes, will be published from July 2026.
The detailed cellar map with program points per cellar will be published in July 2026 on weinstadt.de.
