Anniversary Year 2026 with New Amphitheatre Exhibition, Roman Days and International Museum Day
Künzing on the south bank of the Danube, in the district of Deggendorf, was one of the central forts on the Raetian Danube Limes in the 1st to 3rd centuries — the Castellum Quintana. Here, Danube shipping and the Limes border intersected, and in the late Roman period, the camp was located in one of the most densely populated sections of the province of Raetia. Today, the Danube Limes is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Frontiers of the Roman Empire'.
The Museum Quintana opened in 2001 and has since made Lower Bavarian archaeology accessible to a broad audience. It is a partner institution of the State Archaeological Collection Munich and is certified barrier-free. The collection includes finds from the Roman fort, the late Roman hilltop settlement, and the early medieval reuse of the site.
In May 2026, the museum will open a new permanent exhibition on the Künzing Amphitheatre. It is the only known amphitheatre in Lower Bavaria to date — an archaeological sensation that has been reconstructed in recent years through ground-penetrating radar and excavations. The exhibition presents the history of the structure and the finds from the excavations.
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, Museum Quintana will participate in International Museum Day with special programme items — guided tours, activities, and free admission (depending on the programme).
Künzing is located in the fertile Lower Bavarian Danube Valley, about 15 km east of Deggendorf. The area is characterised by the Danube crossing into the Bavarian Forest — a mixture of floodplain forests, vineyards, and medieval monasteries (Niederaltaich, Osterhofen). Museum Quintana is one of the most important cultural destinations in the Deggendorf district.
Museum Quintana has officially released the full anniversary programme for 2026. A standalone new permanent exhibition on the Künzing amphitheatre will open in May 2026 — the only known Roman amphitheatre in Lower Bavaria will thus be presented museally for the first time.
