Europe's largest mud run for women — 5 km, 18 obstacles, pink mud
Since its inception in the 2010s, the Muddy Angel Run has become Europe's largest women-only mud run. With events in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy, the format attracts over 50,000 female runners annually — Gelsenkirchen, with its traditional 3,000 to 5,000 participants per edition, is one of the most important German stops. The organizer is Berlin-based XLETIX GmbH, one of Europe's leading obstacle race organizers, in cooperation with the City of Gelsenkirchen and the racecourse association.
The course is 5 kilometers long and features 18 team obstacles. They are not designed for peak physical performance but for fun, courage, and teamwork: crawling nets, a large water slide, mud pools, balance stations, hip-high climbing walls. The word *competition* is out of place — times are recorded, but the focus is on completing the course together, not winning. In 2026, five of the 18 obstacles will be newly designed, offering a refreshing twist for repeat participants.
The Trabrennbahn Gelsenkirchen (Gelsenkirchen Racecourse), with its spacious infield and grandstands, provides the ideal setting. The course is built across the grounds, spectators sit in the stands, and the infield hosts the DJ stage, warm-up area, food stalls, photo stations, and the changeover area. The obstacle race transforms into a half-day festival with music, drinks, and an atmosphere more akin to an urban summer festival than a fun run.
A central element of the Muddy Angel Run is its connection to the fight against breast cancer: 1 to 2 Euros per ticket are donated to Brustkrebs Deutschland e.V. (Breast Cancer Germany), and the consistent pink theme (jerseys, foam clouds, banners) makes the cause visible. For many participants, this combination of physical activity, female community, and social engagement is the main draw.
Gelsenkirchen is centrally located in the Ruhr area, the most densely populated metropolitan region in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia — making it ideally positioned for an event of this size. Over five million people live within an hour's drive; the participant field is accordingly diverse, ranging from students from Bochum, office workers from Düsseldorf, and mothers from Münsterland to travel groups from North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands. Travel by tram line 107 from Gelsenkirchen Main Station to the 'Trabrennbahn' stop makes the event accessible by public transport.
The Muddy Angel Run returns to Gelsenkirchen in 2026. The race is organized by Berlin-based XLETIX GmbH in cooperation with the City of Gelsenkirchen.
The course runs through the infield of the racecourse over a length of 5 kilometers. It includes 18 team obstacles, 5 of which are newly designed for 2026. Classics like the crawling net, the large water slide, and the mud pool remain part of the course.
