Classical and crossover festival with around 50 concerts at special venues along the Moselle
Founded in 1985, the Mosel Musikfestival has since developed into one of the most significant music festivals in the Rhine-Moselle region. For years, it has been led by a directorship that consistently expands the festival's unique venue concept: the program design connects each concert with a geographical-historical location that enhances the musical statement. Thus, Baroque vocal music meets Romanesque church architecture, Romantic symphonies are presented in Neoclassical palaces, and contemporary jazz resonates within repurposed industrial areas.
In Trier, concerts traditionally concentrate on the city's UNESCO World Heritage sites, as well as the Electoral Palace and the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Maximin. These venues allow for programs that could not be performed elsewhere – such as monumental choral and orchestral works within the Cathedral's architecture or intimate chamber music in the Palace gardens.
The season traditionally runs from July to October, concluding with prominent final concerts at symbolic locations. In 2026, the festival coincides with the 40th anniversary of Trier's World Heritage status, which will particularly shape the concert sections in Trier programmatically.
The 2026 festival year coincides with the 40th anniversary of Trier's World Heritage status. The directorship has conceived the program accordingly, with an additional focus on the World Heritage sites. The grand Verdi Requiem on October 3, 2026, in Trier Cathedral is the official festival finale and one of the musical highlights of the anniversary year.
