About Monsheimer Markt un Kerb

The Monsheimer Markt, also affectionately called Markt un Kerb, is one of the oldest folk festivals in the region, boasting over 540 years of history. As early as 1483, the municipality of Monsheim was granted market rights – making its festival tradition older than the famous Bad Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt. In 2026, the festival will be celebrated from September 11th to 15th at the Monsheim festival grounds, combining a market, fair, amusement rides, concerts, and a grand parade on Sunday afternoon. Special trains will bring visitors from the region directly to Monsheim. The Markt un Kerb represents the identity and pride of the Rhenish-Hessian Wonnegau region.

Market Rights Since 1483 – An Extraordinary Tradition

In 1483, Emperor Frederick III granted the municipality of Monsheim the right to hold a market. What began as an agricultural market with livestock and goods trading has evolved over the centuries into one of the largest and most traditional folk festivals in the region. Remarkably, the Monsheimer Markt's market tradition is older than the world-famous Bad Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt, which only began to grow in 1417 and took its current form later. This historical depth makes the Monsheimer Markt a cultural asset of particular importance in the Wonnegau.

Five Festival Days from Friday to Tuesday

In 2026, the festival runs from Friday, September 11th, to Tuesday, September 15th. It officially opens on Friday evening at 6 PM with the traditional tapping of the first keg. The highlight is the grand parade on Sunday at 2 PM, featuring local clubs, the volunteer fire department, traditional costume groups, and music bands with floats parading through Monsheim. Monday hosts a major concert on the main stage, and Tuesday concludes the festival with a cozy afternoon of games and the traditional Kerb finale.

Wine, Food, and Rhenish-Hessian Culture

On the festival grounds, wine stands from Monsheim vintners, bratwurst stalls, specialty food vendors, crêpe bakers, and sweet stalls line up. Rhenish-Hessian classics are a must: Spundekäs with pretzels, Handkäs mit Musik, Saumagen, Zwiebelkuchen, and bratwurst. Accompanying these is the wine from the vineyards of the Wonnegau: Riesling, Silvaner, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, and Sekt (sparkling wine) produced locally.

Amusement Rides and Special Trains

Families will find a wide range of amusement rides on the large festival grounds: a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, a chain carousel, a roller coaster, and numerous children's rides. Special Deutsche Bahn trains bring visitors from Worms, Mainz, and Frankfurt directly to Monsheim – a service that has been a tradition for decades and makes traveling without a car particularly convenient.
