Classical Open-Air in front of the castle in the Eifel — Opera, Operetta, Ballet, Pop
The historic Monschau Castle towers over the Rur Valley in the heart of the Eifel and has been the backdrop for the Monschau Festival since 2000. During the summer months, the castle courtyard is transformed into an open-air stage with seating and weather protection — around ten events per year are spread across the period from late July to late August. The festival is one of the oldest classical open-air formats in North Rhine-Westphalia and regularly attracts visitors from the Aachen region, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
The programme is deliberately broad. Opera, operetta, and ballet form the classical core, complemented by chanson evenings, pop and rock classic guest performances, and comedy. In recent years, the format has been expanded with themed evenings — "Dîner en Blanc" as a white picnic event, "Happy Halloween Festival", "Halali Festival", and the traditional Monschau Christmas Market have become integral parts of the Monschau Festival GmbH's event calendar.
The main sponsor is STAWAG — the Aachen municipal utility company. The energy provider has supported the festival for many years, making it largely independent of fluctuating funding sources. STAWAG also has its own area at the festival, without overshadowing the classical character.
Monschau Castle dates back to the 12th century and is considered one of the best-preserved hilltop castles in the Eifel. From the inner courtyard, the audience looks out at the historic walls, which act as natural acoustics. The view of the town of Monschau below — half-timbered houses, red houses, the Rur Valley — is a festival attraction in itself.
Monschau, in the Eifel region in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, belongs to the Aachen district and lies directly on the Belgian border. The town, with around 12,000 inhabitants, thrives on tourism — Hohes Venn-Eifel Nature Park, half-timbered town, textile manufacturing tradition. The festival is the highlight of the summer season, and the Christmas market is the winter attraction.
