21st edition of the Moers Boogie-Woogie classic — Joscho Stephan Trio and Jörg Hegemann
On Sunday, November 8, 2026, the Moers concert calendar will host the 21st Moers Boogie Night. The motto for 2026: "Gypsy meets Boogie Vol. 2" — the second edition of a popular program idea where two distinct musical traditions enter into dialogue: Gypsy Jazz (Sinti Swing, Manouche) and Boogie-Woogie.
The Joscho Stephan Trio is among the most internationally acclaimed Gypsy Jazz ensembles from Germany. Joscho Stephan, a virtuoso guitarist from Mönchengladbach, combines Django Reinhardt classics with his own compositions that integrate elements of Latin, Pop, Rock, and Classical. The trio has performed at the world's most important Gypsy Jazz festivals and enjoys a loyal YouTube fan base.
Since 1987, Jörg Hegemann has introduced audiences to the authentic tradition of Boogie-Woogie — this complex piano style, shaped by African-American pianists of the 1930s, with its rolling bass lines and improvisational energy. Hegemann is considered one of the most prominent German Boogie-Woogie pianists.
What happens when Gypsy Jazz guitar meets Boogie-Woogie piano? Both styles originated in the 1920s and 1930s, both cherish improvisation, both are among the most dynamic genres of early jazz history — yet they are rarely heard together. "Gypsy meets Boogie" is precisely this bridge-building: Joscho Stephan Trio and Jörg Hegemann will play both their repertoire classics and joint improvisations. Vol. 2 is a repeat of a very popular Vol. 1 from 2024 / 2025 — success has initiated the sequel.
The chamber music hall of the Moers Music School on Filder Straße is Moers' most important mid-sized concert hall — with acoustics ideal for a piano-guitar program like this. The Caffè Classico in the foyer offers drinks and snacks (reservations recommended).
The district town of Moers in the Wesel district, with its approximately 102,000 inhabitants, has an intense jazz tradition: the Moers Festival (annually on Pentecost) has been one of the most influential avant-garde jazz festivals worldwide for over 50 years. The Moers Boogie Night fits into this tradition — a smaller, more intimate variant of Moers' jazz commitment, specifically dedicated to Boogie-Woogie and its related traditions.
