Traditional village festival centered around the historic charcoal pile in the Solling
The production of charcoal using traditional charcoal piles (Kohlenmeiler) has a centuries-old tradition in the Solling region. Until the 19th century, charcoal burning was one of the most important economic sectors of this low mountain range, as charcoal was needed for iron smelting, blacksmithing, and many other production processes. Today, this craft is rarely experienced – in the Delliehausen district, it is demonstrated once a year as part of the Meilerfest.
The Meilerfest is the highlight of the village year in Delliehausen. The village community comes together to preserve the charcoal burning tradition, welcome guests, and spend a convivial day. The historic charcoal pile is built up days before the festival and loaded with wood according to traditional methods before being ceremonially lit.
During the ten hours of the festival, visitors can watch the charcoal burners at work, ask questions, and gain insights into the craft. In addition, there will be food with homemade cakes, hearty dishes, and regional drinks. Live music, children's games, and traditional games round off the program. Hikers can combine the day with a tour through the surrounding Solling forests.
The venue is located in the heart of the Solling, one of the largest contiguous low mountain ranges in Northern Germany. The natural backdrop of beech and mixed forests makes the visit an excursion for all the senses. Walkers, hikers, and nature lovers often use the Meilerfest as a starting point for exploring the surrounding forests.
The Meilerfest 2026 in Delliehausen continues a tradition that has grown over many years. The village opens its doors to visitors and presents an authentic piece of Solling history.
Anyone who wants to experience the traditional charcoal burning craft live will find in the Meilerfest one of the few opportunities in Northern Germany to see an active charcoal pile in operation.
